| The Hall at Mawley is one of the finest examples
of stucco work in England. The magnificent plasterwork is believed
to be by the circle of Artari and Bagutti, who were also responsible
for work at Blenheim, Castle Howard and St.Martin-in-Fields. Particularly
unusual, for the date (circa. 1730), are the elements of chinoiserie
to be found within the plasterwork, a feature which is believed
to be unique to Mawley.
Another enlightening aspect of the hall is the staircase,
set in the west half. Totally freestanding it is a remarkable
feat of engineering, and with its serpentine handrail and the
pursuits of man carved upon the string it appears to be without
parallel in Europe.
